Choose a tee set, not a reputation
The same course can be a very different day from a forward tee. Compare the tee’s length, Course Rating and Slope Rating in the USGA database. Slope is a measure used in handicapping, not a promise that one course will feel harder to every golfer. Use your normal carry distances and the group’s experience when choosing.
One concrete scorecard comparison
At New England Country Club, the USGA database lists the men’s Blue at 6,483 yards, rating 72.3 and slope 138. The men’s Black is 6,095 yards, rating 70.7 and slope 135. Those figures belong to those particular tees and rating categories. Mixing a women’s forward rating into a men’s back-tee ranking gives a misleading comparison.
The fee and the challenge are different decisions
Crosswinds lists $75 Monday–Thursday or $96 Friday–Sunday with a cart. Red Tail uses a dynamic quote with cart and range included. Shining Rock has a main course and a separate Acorn short course. Choose the intended course and tee first, then compare the actual total.
Bring a plan for a difficult hole
Agree on a game format that lets the group keep moving. Take enough balls, choose a safe target when a carry is beyond your normal shot, and use the forward option when it makes the round playable. A course list should help you choose a day, not turn a high slope into a badge.
