There's a separate post on this blog about the most underrated courses near Boston. That one covers courses people visit but leave disappointed. This one is different. These are courses most Boston golfers have never heard of at all. They're not undervalued. They're just off the map.

Newton Commonwealth sits 4.4 miles from downtown Boston. Most Boston golfers have never heard of it.
Newton Commonwealth Golf Course — Newton
Donald Ross redesigned this course in 1920. It's 18 holes, par 69, and sits 4.4 miles from downtown Boston — closer than Granite Links. Green fees run $30–$37 on weekdays. Call 617-630-1971 to confirm current rates, which vary by residency and day.
From hole 7, you get a direct Boston skyline view. Reviewers consistently call the greens "exceptionally groomed" and "beautifully maintained." It has 74 Yelp reviews as of May 2026 — less online traffic than a mid-tier sandwich shop. For context on how close it sits to the city, see our post on the closest golf courses to downtown Boston.
Why don't people find it? It doesn't list live inventory on GolfNow. It doesn't rank in Google Maps results for "golf near me" in Boston. You have to know to look for it. That's the only reason the tee sheet stays open.
Gannon Municipal Golf Course — Lynn
Gannon is named after Larry Gannon, described by the club itself as offering "a tremendous test of anyone's golf game." It's 18 holes, 24 minutes north of Boston on the shore. Non-resident green fees run $47 for 18 holes, $25–$26 for 9. Cart adds $20 per person.
The layout is hilly with blind shots. It's not beginner-easy, but it's playable for anyone who hits the ball consistently. Conditions are solid, pace is good, and tee times are available. The reason it never shows up in Boston golf roundups isn't quality — it's geography. Most "near Boston" golf content focuses south and west. Lynn gets ignored.
Braintree Municipal Golf Course — Braintree
Built in 1945. Par 72, 6,554 yards. Non-resident green fees on a weekday peak at $57; residents pay $42. It's 12 miles south of Boston, 20–25 minutes by car. Bookings go through braintreegolf.com, not GolfNow.
Wide fairways, trees and water on the borders, varied hole lengths. Reviews are consistent: "not too challenging," "great conditions," "friendly staff," "very reasonable greens fees." It doesn't come up in Boston golf conversations despite being a full-size muni at a city muni price. For a full budget breakdown of courses in this range, see the cheapest golf near Boston post.
Fresh Pond Golf Course — Cambridge
Nine holes, Donald Ross design, $27–$30, no carts. It sits inside the Fresh Pond Reservation and you can reach it by bus from Harvard Square. Golfers share the perimeter path with joggers and dog walkers. Club rentals are available. Beginners and walkers are welcome.
It's 5 miles from downtown — one of the closest public courses to the city. It shows up in our walking post because it's one of the only courses in the area where walking is the only option. Among serious golfers, it barely registers. That's what keeps it open.
Maynard Golf Course — Maynard
Nine holes, very old, cheap, and almost entirely off the radar even among golfers who live 10 minutes away. It doesn't list on the major platforms. It doesn't have a marketing budget. It's the kind of course that exists because a town wanted somewhere for residents to play — and then mostly forgot to tell anyone outside that town.
Worth knowing about if you're in the MetroWest corridor and want a quick 9 without driving to a full-scale operation. Call the pro shop directly to confirm hours and rates before you drive out.
