Rhode Island has a Donald Ross municipal course for $55 that most Boston golfers have never played. Triggs Memorial in Providence is 50 minutes down I-95, closer than half the courses in the Worcester ring. The state also has the most expensive public round in southern New England at Newport National, and a $52 semi-private in Portsmouth that walks any day of the week. Why Rhode Island beats driving north
Providence is about 50 miles from downtown Boston, roughly 55 minutes on I-95 without traffic. That is the same band as Worcester and closer than most of southern New Hampshire. The difference is what you get at the end of the drive. The Worcester ring gives you foreUP tee sheets and family-owned publics. Rhode Island gives you a true Donald Ross muni, ocean-side golf on Aquidneck Island, and tee sheets that Boston golfers mostly ignore. Less competition for the same Saturday morning.
Triggs Memorial: the Donald Ross muni
Donald Ross designed Triggs Memorial and it opened in 1932 on 140 acres of the former Obadiah Brown Farm in Providence. It plays par 72 at 6,522 yards. It is the same architect as George Wright, a comparable vintage, and a shorter drive than most people assume. For 2026, 18 holes walking runs $55 on weekdays and $65 on weekends. Seniors pay $48 and $55. Nine holes is $32.
Triggs books online through its own site or by phone at (401) 521-8460. Booking online also enrolls you in the course's rewards program. The course sits at 1533 Chalkstone Avenue, about 55 minutes from downtown Boston. If you've already worn out George Wright and its 4-day booking sprint, this is the closest thing to a second helping of Ross at muni prices.
Green Valley: the walking value
Green Valley Country Club in Portsmouth is an 18-hole semi-private that is fully open to the public. The 2026 rate card is short: $52 to walk on weekdays, $62 on weekends and holidays, and $42 after 3pm any day. Carts are $28 for 18 and $14 for nine, always separate. No mandatory cart windows, which several Massachusetts courses in this price band can't say.
Two things to plan around. Green Valley does not rent clubs, so every player needs their own set. And it books through foreUP on its own site, not GolfNow, so it won't show up if a booking app is your only search tool. The drive from Boston is about 75 minutes down Route 24 to Aquidneck Island.
Newport National: the splurge
Newport National in Middletown was voted Rhode Island's best golf course at the World Golf Awards, and it is priced like it. Expect roughly $150 midweek and $175 on weekends in peak season, cart included from late March through late November. The Orchard Course plays par 72 at about 7,200 yards with views toward the Sakonnet Passage. It costs about the same as Pinehills and the drive is 20 minutes longer.
The rulebook is stricter than anything near Boston. Tee times open 14 days out online. Cancellations need 48 hours notice and no-shows get charged. No ride-along guests, no kids under 12 on the course, and a dress code that bans cargo shorts. The pro shop is at (401) 848-9690. Treat it like a special-occasion round, the way you would treat Pinehills.
The rest of the map
Montaup Country Club in Portsmouth is a semi-private 18 along Mount Hope Bay with green fees in the $105 range with a cart. North Kingstown Municipal is the state's other notable muni, around $71 for 18 with a cart, but at 80-plus minutes from Boston it only makes sense paired with a beach day. Cranston Country Club publishes no reliable rate card. Directory sites list numbers ranging from $32 to $85 for the same round, so call (401) 826-1683 before you drive.

Who should make the drive
Triggs is the reason to go. A Ross layout at $55 with a tee sheet that isn't a 7am refresh contest is a real trade. Green Valley is the value play for walkers. Newport National is a bucket-list round, not a regular one. If your Saturday plan is already built around the hardest courses near Boston or the Worcester ring, Rhode Island is the same drive pointed south with less booking competition.
