GolfPass ranked it #14 among public courses in the entire country for 2025 and #18 in the U.S. for pace of play. It is a town-owned muni in Hingham. Most Boston golfers have never heard of it. A Stiles and Van Kleek design the town owns
Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek laid out South Shore in 1922, the same partnership behind Unicorn in Stoneham, and Stiles alone did Gannon in Lynn. Some directories list 1920. The Town of Hingham owns the property at 274 South Street and runs the golf operation.
The card reads par 72 at 6,470 yards from the blues, with a 71.8 rating and a slope of 128. The whites play 6,093 at 69.6 and 126. That is a mid-length course with real teeth. The layout runs through a valley with elevation change on almost every hole. In GolfPass review tags, elevation change is the single most-mentioned challenge, ahead of the bunkers and the undulating greens. Reviewers who play it once tend to say the same thing: club up on approaches and take your medicine when you miss.

The general public books 7 days in advance. Juniors get a 2-day window. Tee times list on GolfNow, and the town takes bookings by phone. Groups of 12 or more go through the head golf professional. A 4.8-rated course with a 7-day window fills the way you'd expect: weekend mornings go early in the window, and the GolfNow listing doesn't always reflect what the shop can actually do.
