How to Get a Golf Handicap in Massachusetts: The 2026 GHIN Guide

Mass Golf runs GHIN in Massachusetts. A membership costs $60 per year, you need 54 holes to establish your index, and you can sign up online in under 10 minutes through the Members Now! program.

$60, a phone, and one afternoon at your home course is all it takes. Massachusetts runs GHIN through Mass Golf (massgolf.org). You join through a participating course. Most public and semi-private clubs in the state qualify. You'll have a GHIN number the same day you sign up, and a Handicap Index after 54 holes.

What a handicap actually is

Under the World Handicap System (in effect since 2020), every score you post produces a differential: adjusted gross score minus course rating, multiplied by 113, divided by the slope rating. Your Handicap Index starts as the average of the lowest 8 differentials from your first 20 posted rounds. Lower is better. Scratch is 0.0.

The index lets you compete fairly against golfers at any skill level on any rated course. Without one, you can't enter most club tournaments, net competitions, or any event that uses handicap strokes. If you play 15 or more rounds a season and want to compete, you need it.

Step 1: Sign up through the Members Now! program

Go to massgolf.org and find the Members Now! program. It walks you through selecting a participating facility near you. The cost is $60 per year. Your membership runs from your purchase date through February 28 of the following year. If you join in June 2026, it's active through February 28, 2027.

You get a GHIN number immediately upon registration. That number is your identifier across the entire national GHIN network. You can also contact a course in your area directly and ask them to set up a Handicap Index for the season. Either path works. The Members Now! online route is faster.

Step 2: Post 54 holes

You need a minimum of 54 holes posted to establish a Handicap Index. That can be any combination of 9-hole and 18-hole rounds. The GHIN system combines 9-hole scores automatically when you post them as 9-hole entries. Two 9-hole rounds pair up and count toward your 54-hole total.

Post scores through the free GHIN app on your phone or at ghin.com. Enter your adjusted gross score, the course you played, the tees you used, and the date. The system pulls the course rating and slope from the database and calculates your differential. You don't do the math. Every rated course has an official rating and slope for each tee set. Those numbers are on your scorecard, or you can look them up at ghin.com.

Step 3: Your Handicap Index appears

Once you've posted enough rounds to total 54 holes, your Handicap Index is calculated and goes live. At that point it updates every time you post a new score. The system always uses the lowest 8 of your most recent 20 differentials. Post a bad round and it barely moves. Post a good one and it comes down.

Your index is available in the GHIN app and at ghin.com. Most tournaments and club events accept it directly. Some events require your index to be established at least a few days before the entry deadline. Check with the tournament coordinator if you're not sure.

Which Boston-area courses qualify for posting scores?

Virtually all rated public and semi-private courses in Massachusetts do. Sandy Burr, Ponkapoag, and George Wright are all certified for GHIN score posting. So are Granite Links, Juniper Hill, Red Tail, Butter Brook, Butternut Farm, and dozens more. If a course has an official rating and slope on the scorecard, you can post from it. If you're not sure about a specific course, search it at ghin.com before your round.

A few practical notes

Post 9-hole rounds whenever you play them. The system combines them automatically. You don't need to finish 18 to get credit.

The course rating and slope appear on every scorecard. Look for a small table on the back or front of the card. You'll need them to post. If you lost your scorecard, both numbers are searchable at ghin.com.

Play from a consistent set of tees. Jumping between tees every round makes your index harder to interpret and less useful in competition. Pick a tee that challenges you and stick to it.

Your membership expires February 28 each year. Set a reminder in January to renew at massgolf.org. If you let it lapse, you lose posting access until you renew. Your score history stays in the GHIN system, but your index goes inactive.

Post accurately. GHIN runs on a trust system. The point of the index is to compete fairly. If you're newer to the game and building up to posting, there's no reason to rush. The index is more useful once your scores are consistent.

Golfers with a handicap play regularly. They have a home course, a preferred tee window, and a Saturday morning slot they try to protect every week. Getting that 8am at Sandy Burr when your index is trending down is exactly the problem Carl solves. He monitors availability across booking systems so you get the slot, not the sold-out page.
