Shining Rock charges you for a cart even if you walk. That rule came in with the new owners, and it is the first thing regulars complain about in 2026. The second thing they mention is the slope: 142 from the gold tees, which makes this one of the hardest public courses in Massachusetts. It sits on a hillside in Northbridge with 255 feet of elevation change, about an hour from Boston. Here's what it plays like, what the ownership change did, and how the booking works.
What Shining Rock is
Shining Rock is an 18-hole course at 91 Clubhouse Lane in Northbridge, off Route 146 near the Uxbridge line. Howard Maurer designed it and it opened in 2010 as the golf half of a stalled housing development. It plays par 72 at 6,735 yards from the back tees. GolfPass lists a 74.2 rating and a 142 slope from the golds. GolfLink lists 74.1 and 139. Either number puts it above Red Tail from the blues and well past anything in MetroWest. The property also has the Acorn, a 1,000-yard nine-hole short course the club calls new, with a beer garden.
The ratings are consistent across sites. Google has it at 4.2 across 139 reviews. Tripadvisor is 4.3 across 37. GolfPass is 4.3 across 13, a small sample. The course did not make the GolfPass Golfers' Choice top 20 for Massachusetts in 2026.
How it plays
The card lies. Reviewers on GolfLink describe long par 3s and short par 4s that don't play to their par, blind shots off elevated tees, and rock ledges that swallow anything offline. The fifth is a 245-yard par 3. The fourth is the signature hole: a carry of roughly 150 yards over a canyon to a small green. One reviewer called it a shot maker's course where you can leave the driver in the bag and score if you can pitch and putt. Another said the layout has some long reverse green-to-tee drives because 18 holes were shoehorned in between houses.
Greens are the recurring subject. Fast, sloped, and large. A June 2026 Tripadvisor review rated the round four out of five but said the greens were hard, not receptive, and covered in ball marks, and that the fee was too high for the conditions. That same reviewer clocked the round at 4:15. Older reviews warn of five-hour rounds and no rangers. Play early.
Do not plan to walk it. The course is built on ledge with big climbs between holes. Under the current cart rule you pay for the cart either way, so take it.
The ownership change
Alliance Golf of Farmington, Connecticut bought Shining Rock in December 2025 from Joe Pasquale and Dan McLaughlin. Alliance kept the name and kept it public. Two policies changed. Cart rental is now required on the championship 18, walking or not. And the range moved to limited-flight balls, which a Google reviewer described as feeling like rocks. The club's own FAQ confirms the cart rule in plain language: golf cart rental fees are required for play on the 18-hole course whether or not players walk.
2026 rates and the season pass
Shining Rock does not publish a green fee table. Prices show live on the CPS Golf booking page and move with demand. GolfLink estimates a weekend 18 with cart near $99. Reviewers in 2016 quoted about $80, and one in 2018 paid $42 for nine on a Sunday afternoon. Budget $80 to $100 for a weekend morning with the cart, less midweek and in twilight.
The season pass is where the club is pushing hard. For 2026, a full seven-day pass is $3,800, a joint pass for two people in the same household is $5,400, and a weekday pass, Monday through Thursday, is $1,695. A $199 application fee applies to any pass bought after January 31. The pass covers green fees only. Carts are still extra every round, and the Acorn is $10 for passholders. There are no senior, junior, or resident discounts on passes, no monthly payment plan, and no online enrollment. You bring a form and a check to the golf shop. How booking works
Tee times run through CPS Golf at shiningrock.cps.golf, the same platform Boston's munis use, or by phone at (508) 234-0400. Live pricing means the same slot can cost different amounts on different days. GolfLink lists no tee time inventory for the course, so don't expect it on the aggregators. Season passholders get advance reservation access ahead of the public. The course runs a Monday league and a Wednesday league on Golf Genius and a Sunday Series of events most weekends through early November, so Sunday tee sheets can be partly blocked.
Where it fits
Northbridge is about 50 miles from downtown Boston, a little under an hour via the Pike and 495 with no traffic. That puts Shining Rock in the same band as Blackstone National in Sutton and the Worcester ring covered in the Worcester guide. Blackstone is a Rees Jones at 6,909 yards and slope 139 for $57 walking midweek. Shining Rock is harder on the ground, more dramatic, and more expensive once the cart is added. If you want the hardest slope you can book within an hour of Boston without paying Pinehills money, this is on the short list with Red Tail and Crosswinds.
