Far Corner is 27 holes on 250 acres in West Boxford, and you can walk 18 of them on a weekday for $56. That combination is why it wins the Best of North Shore award roughly every other year. It has taken it eight times.
Three nines: the Fox, the Heron, and the Hawk. Geoffrey Cornish designed the Fox, which opened in 1976. Any two of the three make an 18 that plays past 6,700 yards from the blue tees. The pro shop rotates which pair is in play, so the 18 you get depends on the day.
The three nines
The Hawk is the one people talk about. Significant elevation change on most holes, real views, and the most interesting golf on the property. The Heron and the Fox are gentler parkland. If you have a choice, take a combination that includes the Hawk.
The land is the selling point. 250 acres in Boxford means holes that are genuinely separated from each other. No parallel fairways, no shouting golfers one hole over. There is an all-grass practice range and a two-tier putting green next to the pro shop, which is more practice ground than most public courses this price bother with.
One thing to plan around: Far Corner does not rent clubs. Every player needs their own set. If you were thinking of bringing a friend who does not play, that plan does not work here.

Two specials are worth building a round around. The Early Bird runs 6:00 to 7:00am: $22 to walk nine, $34 with a cart. And Senior Days for anyone 62 and up run Monday and Thursday until 3pm, with 18 walking at $52 and 9 walking at $27.
Range balls are $8 for a small bucket and $16 for a large. The range closes at 6pm on Mondays for maintenance, which catches people out.
Booking
Far Corner books through ForeUp on its own site or by phone at (978) 352-8300. Because it has 27 holes and sits 40 minutes from Boston, it has more open tee sheet than almost anything closer to the city. If you are looking at 6pm on a Friday for a Saturday morning round, this is one of the few places that will still have something.
There is also a standing tee time program most golfers do not know about. Far Corner holds permanent slots before 7:30am on Saturdays and Sundays for people on its email list. No charge to hold the time. If you cannot make it, you call the pro shop and cancel by Wednesday. For a group that plays the same weekend slot every week, that solves the problem entirely.
Who it's for
Far Corner is for golfers who want a real round without a booking war. The drive is the cost. Forty minutes from downtown puts it past most people's threshold, and that is exactly why the tee sheet stays open. If you are willing to trade the drive for availability, it is one of the better deals in eastern Massachusetts.
